WUI property fire risk assessments often rely on simple checklists, limiting fire departments' ability to make informed judgments. Studies show fire departments lack the resources, training, and tools needed to address rising WUI fire risks. 

To address this, the SFPE Foundation developed a training program supported by a FDHS FEMA Fire Prevention & Safety Grant (FY2021)EMA grant, based on the WUI Virtual Handbook. The handbook offers engineering-based knowledge to help fire departments with risk assessments and mitigation strategies. Developed in collaboration with fire service experts, the training has been successfully tested and improved through pilot programs, showing significant gains in knowledge and positive feedback across various formats.
